How 2 B a Sexy Water Wise Woman – An Area We Can Rule

Sorry to use such uncharacteristically kinzi vocabulary, but I wanted to get your attention. I know the topic is about as exciting as oatmeal.

***UPDATE from Umm Farouq: We are currently at 5% of the rainfall level we should have by this time in January. FIVE PERCENT. Why is it that no one is getting super worried? And the high-rises keep rising.

The lack of water is a REALLY serious problem, especially with a bone-dry winter. Anyone notice the decreased amount of time it flows on water day now? If it is this way in January, what will August be like? The thought makes me thirsty.

My dad, a rabid environmentalist, so drummed the importance of water conservation in us that I literally feel guilty leaving the tap on when brushing teeth. Successful propaganda.

He used to say “The next world war will be fought over water”. Yikes. Mankind has fought aplenty over land, I didn’t really believe him until I moved here and say how water can be used as a tool between nations.

Last spring I sat down with a gentleman at GTZ, the German equivalent of USAID, which specifically focuses on water demand management. We talked about many things, but I wanted practical ideas for conservation I could apply and share (no magazines thought it was a good enough idea to print, ya-sara, so here it is a blog post).

He was very informative, but details about farming didn’t interest me. My ears perked up when he said: “Women are the change agents for household water efficiency”. From tent-dwelling Bedouins to Dabooquettes, ladies, we are the ones who can make a difference. Let the men deal with broken pipes, infrastructure and water theft at a macro level, we can alleviate the problem at a micro level.

Household efficiency can be maximized by training household employees. One of the number one water wasters in Amman is the Househelper/Haaris/Gardener. Can they help it if they are accustomed to plenty of water, thanks to the Nile and tropical rainfall?

You’ve seen it. Rivulets of water downhill, moving up to a stream covering the street. One would think it’s just another broken pipe. But no, at the top of the hill, a hose is laying, spewing water onto the sidewalk. The driveway, sidewalk, and car are immaculately clean. Green grass and  jungle-like tropical foliage peek through the gated walls.

Driveways and sidewalks can be swept.

Cars can be washed with half a bucket of mildly soapy water, and one bucket for rinsing.

Grass and water-thirsty plants are a luxury this country can’t afford, even if we can.

Tala has a great post about it specifically ways to re-use gray water from laundry in toilets.

FOR THOSE WITH UNDER SINK REVERSE OSMOSIS WATER FILTERING SYSTEMS, know that such a system can waste a cubic meter of water a week. Yup, the excess water slips into the sewer system unseen; enough to service one East Amman household for a WEEK. Water harvesting of such ‘clean’ waste will have a huge impact.

I believe that the majority of employees of the diplomatic missions in Amman have such systems, and many ex-pats like me and my family. Let’s honor our host country and find ways to re-use that precious resource. May have to write the Jordan Times over that one.

I had a professor in college who said our next world war would be over water, too. He was convinced. With all of the droughts, it does make you wonder.

  2. I just wrote to a group about this yesterday. I have many friends with huge yards and who have no apparent water problems, wash any day of the week, take long showers, etc. It bugs me to no end, because they are in the minority, and places like Irbid do not even get water pumped in through their municipality. Yes, I have grass and trees in my yard but after hooking up the hose on the reverse osmosis filter, we are saving 1 cubic meter of water per week and using that to water everything, and to clean with as well. Thanks to your great suggestion!

  3. Em, hhhmmm! Global warming sounds iffy, but global drying is reality. Are you getting the same snow levels Illinois is?

Umm F, I suggested this to you before and you did it because I suggested it? WOW, what an honor. I am speechless! I am also a bit mortified, as your grass and trees aren’t what I meant in terms of water-wastefulness…more those who have sod-ed every bit of the expanse surrounding the villa. You guys are oxygenating your home! 5% is way scary, I am going to add that to the post. Maybe you could post some of your water saving ideas?

Yes, we got 12 inches yesterday! No school yesterday and delays today and tom. I’d be glad to send some of it to you- I’m so over winter!

  5. And we only need to flush the toilet when doing #2,at least for a day or two.

Also, let’s not forget to turn off lights when not needed,I’ve been doing that since I was a little child. My granddad and mom trained me well and I always listened to them.I still mind my mom to this day.

  6. Em, oh please send it our way!! You all will have flooding while we are shriveling :S. I bet you look really cute all bundled up, tho.

Krystal, that common US practice may not go over too well here, but it’s what we do :) . Loghts are important too, we even started unplugging things with little red lights when not in use.

  7. 5 percent! Wow, I didn’t know it was that bad! Even my kids were sobered when I shared that statistic with them. Our patch of grass is only about 3 meters square but I will feel guilty watering even that twice a week!

As far as conservation goes, how about the old brick (or plastic bottle) in the toliet tank; every little bit helps, but we really need to identify the big water wasting activities and cut usage there.

I was noticing that so a many facebook friends in the US have had statuses alluding to LOTS of snow and weather. Sure wish they could send some over here.

  8. Oh, and as for boring oatmeal, I found some great recipes for making interesting instant oatmeal packs–S’mores, cinnamon and raisins, etc. Might be good for boy scout camp-outs.

Hi !! i just want to tell you that i made Cinnamon Rolls yesterday ….DELEICOUS!! everyone liked it !!

The thanks goes to You and Nizar :D D

  10. DM, goos reminder about the brick in the tank…and yes, i want those oatmeal packet recipes! We put together a couple for the last campout that way, milk powder, sugar in the bag.

T, SO glad you liked them!!! I am basking with joy to share a treat with you!
