Call to Act

By kinziblogs

T at JoLadies just sent me an email that made something inside go ’snap’.

I am sick to death of so-called honor killings.

It needs to stop. We’ve retreated and said ‘oh no, not again’ for too long, and done nothing while dozens of young women have died. We need to step-up the fight. Someone please organize another demonstration.

I just sent an email to everyone on my mailing list, encouraging them to flood the Jordan Times with letters denouncing this evil slaughter of Jordan’s daughters. I urge you to do the same:

I urge all my friends to write to the Jordan Times jotimes@jpf.com.jo expressing their disgust at the way these murderers of innocent women are just allowed to go free (or have a short prison sentence) under ‘the fit of fury’ law and the allowing of the dropping of charges because the offender is part of the same family as the victim. The following opinion piece by Nermeen in today’s Jordan Times is excellent.

(Qwaider, thank you for the post, also)

Good for you Kinzi!! Since I can’t write to the Jordanian Times, I’ll write a post for my blog. I hope that would be helpful.

Lotta buzzing going on in this sphere of ladies. One letter to the editor has already been published as of this a.m. I think we need our own TV show, too. Time to sock it to them.

  7. The Observer Says:

I sent my email and post it on my blog.

It is time to act! They are shaming us!

Farah, it will. It will be your generation that changes this evil, mine failed. So keep pressing in.

MommaBean, excellent idea. This might be the time to use your silent demonstration idea.

Umm F, lets light the buzz further! TV show, yes ma’am!

Observer, I just realized I shoudl post mine, and I don’t know what is wring with WordPress but it isn’t letting me. Here is my letter:

Here is my letter to the editor of the Jordan Times:

Jordanian men of true honor, arise. It is time for you to take charge and make change commensurate in reflecting modern Jordan in modern civilization.

If you don’t, Jordanian women of honor will be the pace-setters for ushering Jordan into the 21st century of human rights. History will remember you as cowards who were controlled by fits of fury rather than true honor: hiding behind archaic laws that allow the use of violent domination to ‘punish’ and provoke fear in the the females you were called to protect and cherish. Shame on those who perpetuate these barbaric practices, from Parliament to parlor; whether by act or complicit silence.

Women such as Rana Husseini, Asma Khader and Nermeen Murad in her op/ed piece today will be the heros, not you. I am sick to death of having to read about so-called crimes of honor, where fathers and sons are given a cultural pass for beating their women to death over make-up and gossip. I am sick to death of Jordan’s world-wide identity being tied to so-called ‘honor killings’.

Men of honor, you are there, but your voices are not loud enough. Make it a big enough priority to change. You have tarried too long, it is time to act.

  9. UmmFarouq Says:

    Great! Here’s mine.

My heartfelt appreciation goes out to Nermeen Murad for her concise and brave condemnation in yesterday’s Jordan Times of yet another ‘honor killing’ that has taken place in the kingdom.

We Jordanian women have been silenced enough. The time to end this blind acceptance of heinous acts against humankind–and women are half of humankind–is now. Jordanians must engage in dialogue, and within this dialogue must be a social responsibility that nurtures trust.

Teaching girls lessons by means of beating and killing to counter their “disobedience” is not part of this trust, nor is it part of the familial threads that bind us, nor is it part of Islam or Christianity, nor is it part of the innate codes of human conduct.

I call for these antiquated laws to be changed. I call for the fathers and brothers and uncles in this kingdom to be forced to answer for their murders of sisters, mothers, and wives.

    The time is NOW.

Although the tragedy that is called “Honor” Killing is more prevalent in Jordan than in Syria we are still guilty to the same extent.
We all need to speak out against these and other atrocities inflicted on women in our societies.
