Wanda’s Having a Sale!

Our kid’s school just decided to adopt a dress code, too many boys with jeans falling off their butts and too many girls with shirts too low, too tight and too high. It is BEYOND me how parents let their girls out of the house dressed like that, but then again, I have not had the pleasure of parenting a teen-age girl. One chooses which hills to die on with that gender, that subject, and at that age. I figure if that kind of clothing does not come home with the girl from shopping, it will not end up being an argument, mish?

I was asked to talk to these girls about modesty a couple years ago, I told them if your jeans leave creases in your legs when sitting, they are too tight; if you can’t grasp any fabric at the thigh level while sitting, they are too tight. If you are able to count how many threads per inch in the stitching of your bra THROUGH your shirt, said shirt is too tight.  Shirts are meant to cover the goods, not display them, not to draw attention to them. That was my sorry attempt at helping influence their conception of modesty (goodness gracious, as if living in Jordan didn’t point it out), they had a year to get their act together, they didn’t, and now the administration has clamped down.

Everyone else is paying, literally. The new policy is polo and collared shirts only. Of course, I had a very nice selection of t-shirts for the boys collected last summer. Not one polo shirt, because they hate polo shirts.

Thank God for Wanda’s and Mish Normal, where you can buy overruns (and ‘not normal’) mistakes of clothes destined for Old Navy, Kohl’s, Target, Land’s End, Coldwater Creeek, etc.  Cheap. Za3ter has a post about finding a ‘Made in Jordan” label at a mall in the US.

Better yet, the Wanda store past Duwwar Al Waha is having a sale, everything for 2JD.

I got 20 collared polo shirts for 40JD.

It is a day to be thankful I have boys (now with belts) and my daughter will wear anything pink.

  1. Now if you just tell me where Wanda is… Better yet, take me there. I need some clothes for the Beans.

Oh, and I just did a post I think you’d enjoy. No pressure, but if you find it to your liking, it may be inspiration for one of your own.

  2. “If you are able to count how many threads per inch in the stitching of your bra THROUGH your shirt, said shirt is too tight.” Or too see-through :-)

So, you never had friends who walked out of the house wearing the appropriate attire, only to “modify” it (or change into an entirely different outfit) at school? Because, oh man, I knew several girls (including my best friend in middle school) that did just that. Even if you don’t buy them the clothes, teenagers will figure out a way to get them, whether it’s by borrowing from another girl or even stealing. I’m hoping I’m not scaring you, it’s just that I remember how things were when I was a teen, and I have a feeling it’s only gotten worse in the last 10-15 years.

Buying “Made in Jordan” clothing in the US happened to me a couple of times while visiting — including buying unmentionables at a VS outlet in the mall. Boy, did I feel silly!

    Nice post :)
I noticed when I was visiting in Yemen, how in the Arab countries, they allow certain “things” (from dress to behavior) in society, whereas here, in the States, we consider it inappropriate.

  4. 20 polo shirts! Wow, you will only need to do laundry once a month : ) Did you find anything else but polo shirts that would make it worth my while to get over to Wanda’s?

wow great what a great deal…..the first time i went to jordan dh said that i could only wear long sleev shirts and baggy jeans…thankfully i knew better and i had seen pictures of his family…like people in jordan dress more modest than they do here…MEN….do they sell old navy jeans there?

  6. Yemenia68,could you elaborate on some of those “things”.please?

  7. What a good mom you are!

  8. Sale! I love sales, where is wanda anyway?

  9. Michon

Wow, that’s great. :) I like going to Wanda and Mish Normal because they have a good selection in my size. ;) I have to go when they first open, because I can’t take it when it gets busy. haha

Be careful when looking through the clothes. When I was at Wanda, last year, I was looking through some sweaters (on the wall to the left of the entrance) and I touched “Hark.” It was on my hand, I thought I’d pass out. For real, “Elizabeth, honey I’m comming to join you.” I showed an employee, he gave me a kleenex and took the sweater off the rack. UGH beware.

  10. I agree with Marvin Kinzi, you are absolutely a great and goovy (I’m dating myself now) mom.

  11. MommaBean, I couldn’t findf you on Qwaider Planet or Jordan blogs? Waynik? I will check from here.

Sharon, truth be told, I WAS one of those girls, and even with a family not raised in faith would not have been allowed such tight clothes! BUT, these families have a higher standard to live up to than I did, if you catch my drift, and live here.

Yemenia, thanks for stopping by! I, like Krystal, woudl be interested in you take of ‘those things’.

Marvin, aw shucks. I have a fear in the back of my mind my kids will end up in therapy with a random mom like me. :)

Amino, as you go up Wasfi Al Tell/Gardens from Duwwar Al Waha (toward ICS) you will see a large pedestrian bridge. Take the major right turnoff. after half a km or so you will see an Aramex buildingon your right and left. A little farther down on the left you will see “Mish Normal” and “Wanda”. Happy bargain basement shopping!

Michon, oh, I can only imagine what ‘hark’ must be!!!! AAAGGGGHHHH. glad to find another smart shopper out there, an dI agree that I HATE goin there when it is busy.

KRYSTAL! LOL! I still remember ‘groovy’. Thx, sweetie. :)

  12. Desertmom, upstairs, not really, there were sme men’s shirts that woudl fit hubby or oldest son, but in apricot and peachy-pink. I didn’t look downstairs because I was short on time, but I think it is worth a visit!

Well, some of the shirt were long sleeved polos, so it means each kid has four suitable collared polos for the school week per season. Will have to keep up on laundry. :)

Sam! LOL!! Canadians wouldn’t go as tight as Urdaniyyeen as it is just plain UNCOMFORTABLE! Shu practical. I havent’ seen Old Navy jeans, just tops.

  15. Hi Life!!! ME TOO! I got some great fleece jackets at the Duwwar Hawwooz store. My helper told me about them, cheaper than the Wanda I went to. WOW, I need to re-visit.

Sam, so sorry habbebeti! Now you know Old Navy has a big jeans sale in August. Between a coupon, a credit card deal and the sale, I once got eight pairs of jeans for about $10 a piece. May God help you in gettign the smaller jeans…I am in teh same boat. No baby for an excuse, just a slower metabolism without a thyroid. :)
