Dear GAM Blog Fairy,

By kinziblogs

Greetings! It has been awhile since any of us bloggers have whined about the roads and asked for some changes. Maybe we are all resigned to the fact that change is slow, and comes in fits and starts. Maybe you are on Twitter too and not reading blogs now? Maybe the Abdali project traffic made us cynical. I don’t go that way, so have avoided the cynicism so far.

But you know, those Saudi plates are filling the streets again. You know what that means, sigh.  It makes our driving experience in the city a little less than pleasurable. They are crazy, use the sidewalks for right turn lanes,  back up Mecca street in the wrong direction when they miss a turn, triple park on Abdullah Ghosheh at the shawarmah place, double park on Wadi Saqra while kissing in the only open lane by King Abdullah Gardens.

Magic Kingdom habits in the HKJ. They make Jordanian drivers look like rural Kansas driving instructors. At least you can anticipate the wild moves my fellow Jordanians will atempt. Those Saudis are just plain UNPREDICTABLE.

I’m feeling pretty positive, so dear GAM Blog Fairy, I wanted to lodge a comment and see if I did some clapping, you might spring back to life and grant my little wish. It’s an old one, but I wanted to remind you in case you forgot. No, I don’t want you to send the Saudi’s home. We need their money. We’ll deal with it. Gives us stuff to talk about over tea.

It’s about those left turn lanes at stoplights. Folks need a little help, dear fairy. One blue sign, designating left turn only, is not enough. People forget in fifteen feet. Hot days make people forget in five feet. With Saudis on the road, no one even cares, it’s a free-for-all to avoid the Saudi Suburbans at all costs. Left turn, right turn, slow down speed up, just get out of their way!

Especially at Duwwar Ittasalaat. Ya salaaaaaaaam. The traffic going toward Mecca street fills three lanes and goes straight, forcing the lawful middle lane to take evasive action to avoid body-work.

I want arrows painted on the road to show where to go. Yea yea, I know you arranged this when the stoplight was put in, but who ever is in charge of purchasing street paint obviously imports from Shanghai. My kid’s water color paint would last longer.

I want REFLECTIVE RUMBLE STRIPS to show the way, to divide the street. I want it to make a Big Noise when forgetful folks decide it’s ok just this once. Not the big, round, axle-breaking bumps, just the nice, low, square ones.

I want a blue sign on the stoplight that says “LEFT TURN ONLY, Don’t Even Think of Going Straight, Nincompoops”. That way, when they try to pass there, I can do the little wrist-flip and point to the sign as I dee-double-dare them to  force me into the lawful right-lane folks.

I want a camera on top to record the offenders and send them a nice expensive ticket.

I want a vindictive police woman with an attitude and a BIG ticket pad (a mono and moustache would help, a cute one will just cause more traffic. From the right tribe, too) ready to help fund this endeavor.

That’s all for today. Thanks for listening, GAM Blog Fairy. We appreciate you!!!

I will be a deputy sheriff soon with a book of tickets to hand! Don’t know what happens to the Saudis who break the rules – will have to ask. So watch out everyone!

Love this post. Amazing how an ordinary, educated woman can give suggestions that would revolutionize driving in Amman. We’re back in America for a couple months and I’ve driven once. Totally different experience. I’m afraid of being too aggressive on the roads. Reverse culture shock is a funny thing. ~ Um Tulip

I laughed so hard! I hope the GAM fairy grants your every wish :-)

When she’s finished her work in Amman, can you send her over here to widen the donkey-trails-turned-paved-roads in Nazareth? Or build a parking garage somewhere near the Basilica, I would be happy with either.

T, yahoo!!!!! You let ‘em have it!!! That should make some VERY interesting stories to blog.

Um Tulip, lol, that is why I love living here: ordinary people can make a big difference (or, at least pretend they are). Do be careful in America, my kids have to remind me to slow down, not follow so close, and stop at stop signs. @@

Sharon, glad you shared my giggle. I’ll mentioned that to the GAM blog fairy, I am sure she has a sister at work in Naz. That’s how the streets in Jabal Amman got started, sheep trails I heard.

Maher, I think there will be a scrimmage every Friday, yes. I saw you today, and think it is time I wrote a post about you ;)
