America – Land of Too Many Choices

Moose Tracs or Mint Chip? (The Hub chose Moose Tracs)

Reese’s DQ Blizzard or Peanut Parfait? (decided on Heath Bar blizzard, although I should probably wait a week so I don’t eat myself through America again)

Drive to church or walk? (we walked, it only took 15 minutes, Lil Kinz was pulled in a wagon, brought our sandals in my purse)

Blueberry Muffin or Cinnamon Bits Muffin? Both :) . After church brunch with BIL/SIL. Even though their mass is finished before our service, a Memorial Day event delayed them and the invitation came just as my tummy was rumbling, yacking with church ladies.

Too many summer salad vegetables. (one for sure NO: American cucumbers. Bitter ick. There should be a gold medal for delicious cukes, Jordan wins)

Who to visit and when (still working on that one)

How to divide the family home furnishings (fortunately the executor makes that decision. Looks like he’ll be following a tip from “Overcoming the Inheritance Taboo”: draw for order of choices, keep choosing until it’s all gone)

Had my first Israel/Palestine convo today, went well. The hearer chose to listen. Not all Americans are ignorant.

This Memorial Day, I am very thankful for those who chose to sacrificially serve to allow me the freedom to choose so broadly. To act and speak and believe in accordance with my conscience. My father served in the Merchant Marines in WWII, my FIL in the Navy, my grandmother as a Florence Nightingale nurse in WWI. My uncle died in WWII. America has made some tragic errors, has misused power, has had some wretched leaders, but she bounces back, learns and tried again; America is still the greatest show on earth.

  1. Hahaha… I liked the title. Yes, too many choices here. Ordering food at an American restaurant is not an easy task as well :) But when it comes to Muffins I know exactly what I want; orange muffin. I hope we have this in Jordan.
I am sure Memorial Day means a lot to you since it seems you have many relatives served during WWII.
    Enjoy your summer!

  2. What fun eating through America is. May you have many more excellent conversations during this summer and bring many more AMerican hearts and minds to the right path…

    Moose Tracks! Moose Tracks!

Oh how I miss those choices. But on second thought, NOT having the choices has probably been more diet friendly!

Sounds like you’re having a great time!

It’s certainly the land of too many choices when it comes to breakfast. I never get over the weird big sugary delights offered any morning I’m there. Resist – resist.

Cucumbers in May?? That’s way too early except in the desert states or Mexico. Bitter means imported, not American. Good cucumbers are ready in July or August.

  7. Mint chip, for sure.

Ugh, I hate cukes too! My wife makes me eat them. Better than okra, though.

I usually just say “mmhmm” whenever Israel/Palestine comes up in conversation. I save my rants for my blog. ;-)

You have a very starred heritage! Congratulations! I tried to get my wife to go to a military cemetery nearby but she just put out a ton of US flags on the lawn instead. That was nice.

  8. If it comes to Ben & Jerry’s, I’d choose Phish Phood any day. If you can get your hands on Blue Bell, I’d choose Birthday or Wedding Cake flavors. Real chunks of cake. Oh man I just lost a kilo and I think I can gain it back via these delectable thoughts.

We miss you. Closing ceremonies won’t be the same without you guys!

  9. Jaraad, thank you! Orange muffins…I’ll have to check those out!

    Hareega, thank you!

MommaBean, it is fun to expand thought. I have decided tho, as much as I complain about Americans, Jordanians are less willing to listen and learn.

Emi, yea, it used to be I would gain on the the choices, then lose coming back to Jordan (plus, too hot to eat!). Now I just gain everywhere. :S

BTW, yea, those Poptarts and Reese’s Pieces cereal make my teeth hurt just looking at them. I prefer a more savory bfast too.

Lucia, thanks for the tip! Not being agrarian, I am a bit of an ignoramous in the garden. I tell ya, Jordanian cukes are delicious and sweet all year ’round, no seeds, no bitterness. I think they must be a different kind than we have here.

Marvin, we are a no okra household. No lima beans, either. We do have a cool heritage of investment in America, it is a special thing.

Umm F, Aaaahhhhh, B & J! They are never on sale, so I haven’t bought any, probably ever! Mabruuk on the kilo loss!!! thanks for loving me from afar, we did think of you all yesterday. I heard our dog-sitters brought Blondie, so we had a kounouz family rep at closing ceremonies. :)
