Happy 4th Birthday, My Treasure!

Four years ago, after a year of being addicted to bloggers like Natasha, Roba, Lina and Nas and hogging their bandwidth with random rambling comments, The Hub let me get my own blog. Only because a friend of his convinced him I had good things to say and that I would not neglect my family in so doing. Oops. Really only because I had prayed and God probably got tired of me whining – I wouldn’t whine at my husband about it, but God has infinite patience with whiners, where husbands to get irritated. Well, it did tie up the landline, as we were still doing dial-up then (“Honey, so do you know HOW LONG you have been doing that blogging thing today?”).

Then he started an on-line masters program, which was essentially blogging! Then he understood the draw of it :) .

Fa, sick to death of my own generation’s fixations with handbags, manicures and botox, I had discovered a new generation of Jordanians who had things to say. Had issues to tackle, had energy to act on those issues. Who cared that they were all old enough to be my own kids, gosh, I think a few of them were still teenagers. My Jordan experience was ‘born-again’ as a result of those interactions. And now I am happily re-connected to my generation of JO ladies, being published seems to have made up for my rebellion against the cultural value of elegance. So now when they say “Shu nas-haaani!” (oh, how fat you have become!) or “Shu, wijik mish helweh” (oh, your face is not nice) I say “Mumkin biddik nathara jadeedeh?” (Maybe you need to get your eyes examined!”. No, not really :) and just love them anyway.

So, I have picked up a very fun audience along the way. From 3 to 30 now :) . I very much like being a small niche blogger, and all the pleasant peeps who pop up in the comment section. Some have become treasured friends off-line, some I have worked with in real-time. Approximately 325,000 views (those 30 x 10K), 12,000 comments (my WordPress mahram protected me from 96,000 pieces of spam) and 1,500 posts later, I haven’t run out of stuff to say and it seems you folks generally stick around. What a book this will be for my kids: Little Apartment in the Desert City.

Thanks to my number one post, ‘Dumb Blonde Jokes from Breaking Dawn’ and other Twilight stuff, my demographics were totally messed up, making American teen girls my second biggest reader base after affluent, religious, well-educated middle-aged mothers of teens from the UAE, UK and US. Those Twilight teens edged our my usual suspect secondary readership: well-educated, religious, affluent young ‘Asian’ men from the MENA region. Shabaab, yani.

I even have a strong reader base in Dulles, Virginia and Washington, DC. ;) Bitkhaylu!

I still never have gotten a blog roll going, but now get to add a badge from GO! Overseas Top Jordan blog with my favorite aggregators Qwaider Planet, Jordan Blogs, Girly Gator and itoot  (excuse me for lazily not linking, I think most of you know how to find these). I did get nominated for Best Non-Muslim Blog for the 2010 Brass Crescent Awards, but didn’t make the final nomination list. It was fun anyway :)

It is quite an honor for an Opinionated, Post-Middle-Aged, Evangelical, Right-Winging, Mouth-Breathing Hetero Mom to be welcomed by such a decidedly diverse readership. MWA! I know I make some people crazy at times and I thank you for coming back when things blow over.

God has been good to me through this blogging season, patient, firm and consistent. Sometimes when I get lost in links instead of mopping floors, He gently turns off the internet, or the electricity to get me focused. So far, I haven’t ever forgotten to pick up the kids from school, either. Blogging, of all things, has taught me much about His mercy and justice, I hope my readers have seen that too. :)

  1. TenaciousB

That’s a rather unorthodox definition of “shabaab.” ^_^

  2. Tenacious, you may be right. Does it help redeem the word from negative implication, or shall I add an adjective like ‘excellent’ or something?

  3. Congrats to you my dear! Keep the fun times rolling! You know I love and enjoy your writings and musings immensely! :-D

    Keep it up!

  4. V good.
One more time after Four years.

  5. Still here, still reading, still loving what you write. Happy blogoversary Kinzi. Thank you for the lovely memories

  6. Des, shuruftni bi woojoooodak! I appreciate you!

Hamede, wow, we go WAY back in blogging years (I wonder if blog years are like dog years…7 to 1?! Thanks for your encouragement.

QWAIDER!!! Oh my! Remember when we were all on Jordan Planet? Before Qwaider Planet was launched into orbit. Now you are married to another blogger and a daddy to a precious daughter. I am so glad you are still there, and thankful you still provide us QP as a ‘blogger blayground’. Greetings to Mai!

  7. Kinzi – Congrats and Happy Anniversary! This celebration is well-deserved, and I am so happy for your success.
I hope one day to gain the type of loyal readership you have – I have a lot to learn about what the right things to do are, or how to draw an audience, but until then, I’m just doing my best, writing what’s in my heart.
You are a great role model. :)

  8. Congrats from all the Shabaab community in Jordan! :)

  9. Wait, you lost me at “the hub let me get my own blog.” Like it’s anyone’s decision BUT yours? ;-)

    Congrats on the blogiversary!

  14. It seems your Caffeine intake is high these days :) The past two days or so you posted many posts, more than usual. I wanted to comment on couple of them but we are in the end of semester chaos. The problem is I can’t miss on reading any of your posts. But I had to comment on this one to share with you your celebration of your blog’s 4th birthday.

Insh’Allah for many more years of happy and fruitful blogging.
“my WordPress mahram” that was hilarious :)

  15. Hala, very fun to have you back in the blogging world. :) I really enjoy those who read and comment, especially those who blog also as it is a more of a real relationship than me going on and on to myself :) .

Qwaider had a post, way back when, with the basics: write from the heart, which you do, comment on other people’s blogs, which you do, link to them and post pictures. There was lots more, stuff about tagging and blog roll which I have forgotten :)

Ehab, I am honored by the Shabab Community of Jordan :)

Marvin, I had to think hard about that one…I think I used this word before and also gave the wrong impression that he ‘lets’ me do stuff or I need his permission. The Hub and I are a team pulling quite a bit of responsibility together, a great mix of one hyper-relational and one hyper goal-oriented. If did all I want to do in the relational, we would never eat. He saw that one coming with blogging, and helped me through my excesses in the beginning to find a balance. Blogging also kept me busy when he was working on his masters degree :)

Nadia, Nido, Ayash and Susu…thanks so much for your readership! Nadia who I am grateful to know now, Nido who I met once and now takes my place in California, Ayash and Susu, God bless you!

Jaraad, lol, I had a ‘blog-belch’ this week, didn’t I? I did have a couple days off for the holiday, and oh, you should see my draft folder. Honored that you read here!!!! (glad you caught the ‘mahram’ joke, I had just been reading about the concept and it seemed a fit) Hang in there with end-of-semester chaos, may God give you clarity of mind and moment as you complete it!

Reminds me of the story of the escaping prisoners whose tunnel under the wall comes up in a school playground. He leaps out shouting: “I’m free! I’m free!”
A nearby child looks on scornfully: “That’s nothing. I’m four.”
    Congratulations on your fourth.

  17. BWT, ha!! That is too cute, my daughter will love it! Thanks so much for the congrats and the encouragement of real visits and comments from a real author!

(glad you are in the relative safety of Glum Old England. It seems the US will be following Ireland in fate soon, so we can commiserate)

  18. “the hub” i love it! Happy 4th Birthday!

  19. Hey Shuf! Thanks! As with all my nicknames for people, there is a story behind it. Here is The Hub’s story:

  20. Wow! And to think, you came to my blog. By the way, brilliant-titling it Breaking Dawn.
