The National Center for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Genetics.
I wrote Dr. Kamel’s office this week, as I had been a Very Bad Patient and forgotten my bi-annual appointment. I said so, and apologized profusely. His admin gal wrote me back saying how much they missed me, how much I make her laugh, and yes by all means here is your appointment. I love those folks, Dr. Kamel and an entourage of female nurses, technicians and resident endo-docs.
One would think it was my own experience as a cancer survivor that motivated me, but no, it was two friends who now have endocrine issues. One was under the ‘care’ of my previous endocrinologist, the one I confronted about his unwillingness to do a biopsy because ‘it could never be cancer’. Never say never where cancer is concerned, ya Doctor.
I have had the privilege of introducing women from the US, the UK, Germany, Korea and even beloved Jordanians who knew nothing of him and the Center. It is a joy, and one of those things survivors do…go hold the hand of the worried ones until they can rest assured the C-word is not a part of their thyroid experience.
Have you checked your neck? More importantly, have your mom check her neck. If she is tired, gaining weight, losing hair, experiencing dry skin or has a bump on her neck, book her with Dr. Kamel and the staff of the Center.

Wow I hadn’t seen that confronting my doctor post. Brave woman. I could never ever do that. The last time I confronted a doctor, I must have been 8 and he was trying to give me an immunization injection. No one had bothered explaining this to me because they thought it would be easier to surprise me! So I grabbed the needle from his hand and injected him with it
Hani, ha, it was those ladies in his office, the ones he talked down about, that gave me the courage to speak up. I could hear him saying “Oh, you have cancer, Sorry, naseebik” after they were his patient for years and didn’t have internet access like I did to research.
GREAT STORY!!!! IYou were one tough cookie Hani. Would love to hear it from the other side, how the doctor tells that story with a couple decades to embellish,
We always tell our friends about our favorite oncologists, when a friend comes down with cancer.
