Reason #19 to Love Jordan – Tomatoes

Red gold indeed.

To my surprise, we have enjoyed flat upon flat of gorgeous red tomatoes, at a more August than February price these days. We have been making homemade spaghetti sauce to freeze by the kilo – a summer time activity, not dead-of-winter activity.

This raised a red flag, and I wondered who is not buying our tomatoes? Usually, our best stuff is exported.

When in doubt, ask a Dukanji I always say. Fa, today I asked our local Dukanj what was up, and he said “Iraq rejected our tomatoes, but Saudi is buying them, so grab them while you can”

I recently bought one tomato for $2.25. Yes a mere one. I didn’t splurge for the organic either. $2.99/lb, over $6.00/kg. OUCH. I could be a whole crate for that much in Jordan and they for sure would be better tasting!

  2. Anon, whoa, that takes homesick-for-Urduni-bandura to a new expensive level. That is as much per pound as hamburger, isn’t it? Ya lateef.

  3. Such a great reason! I love Jordanian Tomatoes!
