Another Snow Story

Our kounouz went a little kerazy over the snow. We got word school was going to be delayed in starting, so they were out at 7:53am having a snowball fight. Yes, with only 1cm of snow, they had a strategy: pile all the snow from all the cars on our street into our driveway, making neighbors happy with snow-free cars and they had two good-sized drifts to obtain cold, wet ammo.

The finally got bored with pelting each other, so they walked to a friend’s house and did the same thing. Then they walked to their school (which by now decided to cancel school for the day) grabbing friends along the way, and even some teachers, for more snowball fights.

Later, we still had a pile of snow in the drive. The younger two were getting ready for me to take them to church, and while they were waiting, five Khaleeji men renting an apartment came slip-sliding down the hill. The were all in dish-dashes, suit jackets and sandals (maybe they are Libyan? who knows, I wasn’t going to ask), and skid down the hill even when it is just wet with rain. Twice when History Buff was outside, one of them slid and fell flat on his backside. HB, not wanting to embarrass him, pretended not to see.

So they were watching the boys rough house, then one of them began to slide and fell in a most spectacular arc of flailing arms and legs. His friends were laughing at him. The boys both gasped, staring, and Project Boy began to giggle too. HB, mortified, but also stifling his own contagious giggle, used the opportunity to put snow down PB’s neck. He screeched, and they were soon dumping snow on each other, howling with laughter – but really because of the guy who fell down for a 3rd time in HB’s presence, trying to cover his dignity. His friends helped him up, distracted from their own teasing by the boys.

I hustled them into the car, and they cracked up all the way to church.

Friends say we had more snow than Chicago, Lake Tahoe, Minnesota and Vienna Austria. :)

  1. They all dressed alike? And why would they wear sandals in snow?

As soon as the snow fell round our way it was immediate snowball fights in the evening and in the morning, waiting for the school bus.
Even with thick snow and low temperatures -13C schoolgirls were walking to school with bare legs, short skirts and flat court shoes – even the threat of errant or aimed snowballs didn’t deter them.
Stupid or determined? I can’t work it out.

  3. Your story sounds like SO much fun! It made me want to go out and play in the snow!
Then I remembered it would make my hands wet and cold, and I stayed inside instead ;)
